Getting Divorced in Utah: What is a Divorce Going to Cost Me?
Unfortunately, there is no price tag on divorce. The many
variables that come up in a divorce are impossible to predict. In fact, none of
the attorneys that I talked to would even give an estimate because it can vary
so drastically. However, an attorney will ask for a retainer to even start the
process and a typical initial retainer often runs around $5000. Occasionally,
in a case that looks to be uncontested you might be able to find someone that
will go as low as $2500 for the initial retainer fee, but remember that is no
guarantee of what the final bill may be.
The Utah Courts government website provided the following
list of some of the costs and fees associated with a divorce, but they also
acknowledged that the cost can “vary greatly”.
- Fee to file the petition
- Online Court Assistance (OCAP) fees
- Fee for the Office of Vital Records and Statistics
- Fees to serve the petition and summons
- Attorney fees
- Copying costs
- Fees for the Divorce Education class and the Divorce Orientation class if there are minor children
- Fees for mediation
